When I first got my car someone did a **** poor job of reinstalling the Delco ETR cassette radio. Wasn't supported in the rear. Had the wrong shaft nuts and *****. So I replaced it with a Pioneer MVH-S5522BS radio, 4x6 dash and 6x9 rear Rockford Fosgate speakers that I was able to install without hacking anything up. Not exactly audiophile headphones sound quality but respectable. I since got another ETR radio with the correct nuts and *****, not that I have any intention of using that transistorized fuzz box. After I installed the Pioneer radio the first time the wifey got in the car the first thing out of her mouth was "that radio looks out of place". I felt like I just got clothesline by The Fabulous Moolah. Now I don't think it looks that out of place. However I would like something more traditional looking. Are those radios any good and how's the sound quality compared to the Pioneer that I already have. I don't want to take a step backwards in sound quality. I don't want any cell phone/Bluetooth thingy in the glove box, a aux added converted stocker, or a USB amp.
Go on crutchfield and let her pick the best looking one..
Im betting the retrosound overpriced china junk. I thought about it until i read reviews online and here.
I have had two retro sound radios in two different cars. Sounded poorly and totally unreliable. Take your wife out to dinner and save your money!
I agree.
Get yourself a core original radio (doesn’t have to work) and send it to Tayman Electric and he can convert it to stereo out puts and add things like Bluetooth so you can use music from your phone and incorporate you phone into it for hands free use.

I already have two working Delco ETR's. If I wanted to I could install an aux socket in there myself. Years ago I sent a radio in for a repair/restoration. They promise me it would be better than new. Let's just say I wasn't happy camper. You know the expression "F me once".

yup
my experience was fantastic with adding aux clean and tune..guy below..
also knock on wood this setup for me was clean and still working and added. Usb ports..and kepts lighter..
But wait….I have a two year old Retro-Sound in my ‘71. Sound is good in a convertible, top up or down. Yes, it may need an amp to boost the background. It has more functions than I can use. I want to go Sirius-XM to hear what difference that makes before I try the amp-thingy.
I have dash speakers and kick panel speakers installed by PO. Can get plenty of sound while cruising, top down. Complements the exhaust, you know.
Much better quality than Custom Auto Sound unit I had in the Chevelle. That was junk but also purchased 2010-ish. It
was hard to toggle between functions. The Retro has been flawless to date.
Retro-Sound…. One vote. Has a stock look both face and *****.

Thank you but I'm not sending anything out to be repaired, restored, or converted. It's ether new or go home. If I can't fix it myself, I throw it out. I have the original speakers, radio w/nuts, *****, wiring, and bezel if I ever need to put it back original.

Hum, a vote for the RetroSound. The long beach without XM is what I was thinking about. NASCAR radio is about the only thing that's any good from XM IMO. This 64 year old likes Pandora's Lamb of God radio. I agree, all those radios can definitely benefit from an amp. The only spot that I could fit one is in the battery box since I relocated the ECM to the jack compartment. I'm not a fan of having a amp in plain view.

Dont know if they have improved the last 10 yrs or so but the friends I had that bought them werent happy.
No power...horrible sound just weak. Like an old Kmart Kraco piece. Overpriced crap
Go to a professional shop/installer and get the good stuff. Its not as pricy as it was a decade or so back .
The Retrosound units Ive been around have always been horrible.
I agree, it does look out of place but as I look at the picture further, theres stickers and badges added around the upper shifter area so it actually looks consistent with the look of the general area. Its not like its a stock look.
If it was all clean and stock Id vote for a stock unit upgraded with modern guts and functions, (Ive done that on my last few cars) but you already eliminated that in your post, so if the unit thats there works to your liking, you might as well leave it.
I will be the lone hack to promote the CustomAutosound.
My wife and family like the looks, not the corvette purists, but who do you think I care about.
It is a convertible with the top off most the time. Those with convertibles know what audio futility is.
My hearing is mostly shot - too much time working on helicopters. No reason for me to pay for something I can't hear.
I am usually listening to the motor anyway.
Bluetooth works and it powers up ready to connect to phone - Then either Zep or Aerosmith and I am out.
There is no good sounding retro radios. Put a stock radio in for looks and hide a bluetooth amp. Then use your phone to run.
Mine is in a 66 but you get a idea. I also have a 10" sub ran off same amp. The fidelity is amazing and as loud as you can take
I bought a RetroSound radio from Crutchfield last Sep for my 81. Looks good and works good. Sounds good too. But I also replaced all four speakers which were all original and very messed up. It's not going to win any loud sound contests but is just fine for me.
