Vacuum bypass for head lights on 81 corvette
I ordered a new switch for the vacuum bypass on headlight doors but there's no way it fits, My car has the hole for it in front and not under the dash. Also there's a furrel in the dash that the shaft of the switch must go through and there's no way that can happen since the **** and shaft of the new switch are one piece and doesn't come off. I am thinking there must of been an update for the 81 model and no one at the parts store noticed. Anyone have info on this issue?

The same override switch was used from 1968-1982.
From the photos I have seen of the 81 override switch location yours is in a different location.
Either location to retain the sleeve the switch must be split in 2.
Once the switch is open simply remove the spool, slide the sleeve over the spool, push spool and sleeve back through the opening in "Your" dash then snap the two halves of the switch together.
Before snapping the two halves back together now would be a good time to add a dab of Dow Corning vacuum grease to the spool.

That is not the switch location for the headlight over ride switch on the 81. Is this the over ride switch you have? The factory location was under the column by the trim piece. There should be a metal bracket under there that the switch mounts in. Look behind the small trim piece that is below the steering column. There should be a mounting bracket behind that trim piece going across the opening below the column. You can take that small trim piece off from below the column by removing the 4 small screws that hold it on. The bracket for mounting the over ride switch should be behind it if it is still there. Location shown below.
