Doing some rear suspension upgrades and I've dropped the tank and the rear spring. While my car was garaged for the majority of it's
life before me, it was also liveried in a pretty damp setting. The rear end of the frame is covered in some pretty good surface rust
and I was wondering if there was anything I could do to remediate it, well short of stripping it back to bare metal etc.
Thx.
That's some pretty heavy scaling. I agree, you should deal with it sooner rather than later. If the car is a place that accessible and able to rinse off with a hose, I would soak that whole area repeatedly with a good rust remover, like Evaporust or any other good brand. Spray it, let it soak, rinse and repeat as many times as necessary. Then, when it's clean, paint it with a good semi gloss black paint like POR-15 or any other good brand. It may be a little time consuming and messy but it will certainly be worth it in the long run. Cheers, Greg
Never tried spraying evaporust..should be interesting to see how it does.
before that though, i am wire brushing off the loose rust first.
drill brushes steel and brass..cups and wheels in a kit cheap.
then i would just spray it with chassis black..
I wire wheeled everything I could and painted it when I did my rear suspension. Made a big visual difference, and shouldn't hurt anything if I ever do a body-off and blast the frame.
got a 4-1/2 inch right angle grinder? get a cup wire brush. not real stiff one. it will clean most of that off. then any of the naval-jelly through POR15 type rust encapsulators all work much the same and pretty good. the last pic. pull those 2 brackets and get behind them and get them better since you have them out. rear suspension looks pretty good too.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I researched rust removers after the Evapo Rust suggestion but the car is in the garage and hosing it off might be tough. Then saw very good things about the loctite naval jelly and with its consistency would stay where you put it and not run off like a spray might.
think I'll try it on the very light rust on the tank straps and see how it does.

I’ve been very happy with Rust Bullet Black Shell Paint. It paints on without leaving brush marks. Very resistant to chipping or wearing off. Rust Bullet has anti-rust primer as well.
Wire brush off loose rust. Then coat with Loctite Extend. Nice black finish appears. If not, rattle can your favorite satin/ gloss…
