‘79 ignition issues
Story starts of with the installation of a new alternator, after install car fires right up, go to turn it off and it won’t shut off. Pulled the wire from the coil to get it to die and that worked. After re-installing the wire to the coil to trouble shoot the wire to the coil is not getting power. Just looking for best ideas of which rabbit hole to run down first. Thanks.

First, sounds like your new Alternator has a defective diode.
Second, check all your fuses. you may have popped a fuse when pulling the wire on the distributor.
Next time pull the large wire off the Alternator. Car then shuts down. Bad diode. return Alternator.
