Im scared of the day that either my hood release cable breaks, or the locks get stuck, or something else otherwise happens that will results in my 82's hood from being released. I've read several posts already with people who have had this happen, and they say release by reaching up through the side louvre, but I dont think that would work for me considering all the crap that was crammed into this engine bay.
So what can I install now that would serve as a backup incase I cant get the hood open the normal way?? I'm thinking maybe a thin piece of rope that attaches to the driver side hinge?

YOu can get some 1/16 inch cable and make a loop on one end as a handle ad run the other through the opener and crimp it. You can get all the parts at a hardware store and they sell them as kits at some of the corvette suppliers

There is a cable that runs from the left side to the right side so if you release the left side the cable opens the right side and if the right side is stuck you can reach in and pull the cable.
I have a 77, which I believe has the same style hood release system that your car has. I have so far never had an issue with the original cables. However I have read numerous stories on here about people that can't open their hoods.
So about a year ago I did this.
Drivers side, drill small hole in the lever. insert cable and secure with a cable barrel. Top view.
On the passenger side solder a wiring connector ring to the cable and attach to the factory pin like this.
On the other end of each cable make a loop and secure with a cable clamp. Loops should hang down so they are just above the bottom of the frame, out of sight but easy to reach. Total cost about 4 bucks.
