I would guess that there is a problem with the convector/heat sink, if it's like a '72, it may be burned up or have a bad connection.
Each speaker had a soldiered short harness attached and the wire colors for both are Green and Black.
There is also a harness that plugs into radio itself.
The left speaker will be Dk.Green and a Black and the right speaker will be Lt.Green and a Black, that is how you define between L & R at the radio.

What they said..... New speakers would be a good start. Have you gone through the antenna. The antenna at the rear needs to be grounded correctly. The cable from the radio to the antenna needs to be grounded where it is supposed to be,,,,,, and NOT grounded where it isn't supposed to be.

Radio does power up but sound coming out of speakers is very faint… I was thinking if it was the ground I would get no power from radio
I normally eliminate the possibilities one at a time:
Speakers - start here because this is the end of the line on your sound, and these are the easiest to test/replace.
Wires from stereo to speakers - these can rub on the car over time and start to ground out
Power wire - test for clean consistent power
Ground - test for solid connection to frame
Stereo - If nothing else fixes your problem it's the head unit and unless you know how to rebuild one you will just need to replace it.
Breakdown of the steps:
Find a speaker that isn't currently installed in your car, run the speaker wires to it and see if the sound is better, if it get's better most likely your speakers have been blown. But this would be rare to have both go out at the same time. You are describing a faint sound so unless one speaker went out completely and the other is blown it's probably not your speakers, but I would start here anyway.
A lot of people forget to test the speaker wire itself, it can easily ground out between the stereo and the speaker location, to test this you will need to splice your speaker wire close to the stereo and test the new speaker, not just test it at the end of the speaker wire. Or you can remove the speaker from the car and test it from a different sound source and see if it's still faint.
If that doesn't work then you either have a power/ground issue, or the actual stereo is failing and will need rebuilt or replaced. Power/ground is easy enough to test by running new wires straight to the stereo, most likely you will find your radio is old and components are failing inside the unit.
My 54 year old original radio,,, AM/FM,,, works real well after making sure the antenna and coax were grounded correctly.
Even the channel select works.
