I just noticed that the 3 nubs on a rally wheel aren't evenly spaced. The reason I believe is to make putting the cap back on the wheel easier. In the past it was always a challenge getting the cap back on the wheel without chipping the paint,denting the cap or beauty ring but if I put the cap on the 2 nubs closest together the cap pops right on. Curious if this is in the owners manual.
With "alloys" found everywhere today most are not familiar with hubcaps I dare say. That said, yI've found this type of arrangement on a fair number of "higher" priced cars, with press fit hubcaps from back in the day
