Is it possible that GM put Buick Quadrajets on a 1971 big block car?
I have a 1971, 454 with what appears to be a factory installation. The fuel filter fitting comes straight forward from the carb as opposed to pointing to the right side. The rigid fuel line looks correct and is one piece from the carb to fuel pump. The carb ID is 7042251 which would be right for a 1971 installation.
Possible?
Nope. That was by someone else. The factory Chevy carb will fit the factory Chevy fuel line for example. Several other potential issues that escape me at the moment. The Buick carb will not just drop in there.
since the carb was installed at St Louis and only the Corvette was built at that building (other Chevy cars and trucks were built at another building) there is no way it was put on at the factory

Why do people think things like this are possible?

To give him the benefit of the doubt, he's looking at a clean and factory-appearing installation; I suggest cutting the OP some slack. There are a bunch of exceptions that did occur, so it never hurts to ask the question.

With all due respect: No possible way that Chevy ran short on their carbs and brought in some Buick carbs and fuel lines to fill the void? I don't find that to be a reach... did and does still happen,

Thanks, but no need to cut me slack. I'm a big boy and can hold my own.
Although not carbs and a completely different type of thing (wouldn't the carb have come on the engine assembly to the plant...???)
In 68 there was a bunch of Chevelles ended up with Buick interiors (seats I would imagine)
The stories range from strikes (no actual documented strike I believe) also to some fire but it kind of most likely was related to the riots (MLK) at around that time..
That line keeps moving as long as they can make it happen

two things the carb was installed at the car assembly plant. So see my first post about that
second. The chevelle with Buick interiors was possible due to the fact that all seven plants that built A bodies built them simultaneously on the same line at the same time. And the interiors where put in by Fisher body and NOT by GM Plant workers. Fisher body was a part of GM but it’s own entity and GM workers where not aloud in the Fisher plant.

there is a99.9% chance that Rochester ran short and set a replacement that was not calibrated and federally emission tested to St. Louis The corvette carb is a very very low production compared to the Buick Making up stories and lies is not going to work

That would actually make sense and there's a step for it in the AIM so I'm not sure why I though they might have come on the motors

No idea and I've heard so many different reasons over the years that well who knows... My point was simply that if something wasn't available and something else fit.... things happened

the problems with these made up stories is the parts at the plant where there were assigned to a car that was going to be built unless the part was used to build a "base" car. there was hundreds of out side suppliers making parts. when you start subbing parts it effects a lot of parts down stream and some might require changes made well before that assembly station. the plants where not there making custom cars or where the workers a custom car builder.

Yes but the Chevelles with the Buick interiors weren't a made up story, those are a known commodity. Now why they ended up with them, those are the many and varied stories

like I said those two cars where built side by side and that was done by fisher body
I would think a good picture of the fuel line would help with the mystery, which may not be a mystery at all. The carb # given appears to be a 1972 number. 1971 should start out 7041XXX. Big block should be 7041204 for THM or 7041205 for 4spd according to NCRS spec guide.
the buick seats fit in chevelles, cutlass, lemans etc. i don't think a buick fuel line is going to go from the fuel pump to the carb without alteration. if they had to have carbs, they would have used Impala or truck carbs that belonged on a 454.
Hey, a question has been asked and answered. A discussion has ensued, so we are all learning something. That’s what is great about these forums. Carry on.
Your '71 LS5 would have come with a CEC Solenoid attached to the front of the Carburetor. Does yours still have it?
My Quadrajet 7041205 is the original on my '71 with the CEC Solenoid still operational, but I don't use the vacuum connections on the CEC Solenoid due to it only allows vacuum advance when the solenoid is energized.
