OH- 78-79 355 is what was in the housing when new, pull the cover for a look. Also check that lower left hole to see if that is a crack in the base of the hole from a long bolt.

The OH indicates it is a 3:55 ( used in 1978 and 1979 but not to be confused with the 1980 which were a totally different unit)

The 092 is a Julian date. The 92nd day of 1979 was Monday, April 2.

The W is for the Warren, Mi plant where the unit was manufactured.

The 9 indicates 1979.

The E indicates an Eaton carrier.

The 1 indicates it was assembled on the first shift.

Thank you GTR199 and 69L88 for the explanation.
This is a bare housing that I am going to build with 3:55's to replace the 4:11's in my 64.
GTR199, do you have a picture of the area where I should look for the crack?
Thanks,
Joe

Typically, they crack at the large window radius and the crack will work its way down to the cross shaft, split the case in halt and implode.

Do you have the caps for the diff housing? You should check the fit and set them for 001" rock.

Cases from 63-68 aren't too good. 69- 71 better but 72-79 or new Eaton are what I would use. I don't care for the yukon cases or Auburn cone posi's.

Thank you for the pic. When I first read, "Also check that lower left hole to see if that is a crack in the base of the hole from a long bolt", I thought you were talking about the housing.
I disassembled this rear years ago because of a bad ring and pinion, so I have everything.
I am struggling with sciatica now but getting better. As soon as I can I am going to clean and inspect everything.
Thanks, Joe

Yes I was referring to you picture of the strut rod holes in the housing. It might just be dirt in the hole but check it. I have see those broken inside.
Good luck with the back/leg issue, I know it well myself.

Thanks again for the information.
"Do you have the caps for the diff housing? You should check the fit and set them for 001" rock"
Can you please elaborate on this statement, I do have the caps and I make sure all the mating surfaces are free of any burrs and check the cap surface for flatness.
I have be battling this for almost 3 months now but I am improving since I have been going to physical therapy.
I brought my 64 FI coupe home from Florida on May 26th and I have not be able to drive it yet because it is my left leg that is bad.

The rear end design is a result of extensive wind tunnel testing, every facet and edge on the rear is there to improve the C8 aerodynamics.
