Just for fun punched the $1,268 you paid into an inflation calculator I found on the web. It calculated that $1,268 in 1977 is $6,202.85 in today's money. To check it, I put in the $2.10/hr I made sacking groceries at the IGA in 1977 -- which came out as is $10.13/hr today. It seems low, as $15 plus is common at the local fast food joints these days. Inflation is true pestilence.

Having grown up in that period I don't need a calculator to relate as I am sure many here can as well.
I was graduating from HS 1 week after that invoice date. Leaving trade school starting wages were $3-$4 hour. I know a guy who was a CPA making $20-$25k a year. That was big money then. Houses were $30-$40k in the city and $20k outside. New vettes were about $8k then with under age 25 insurance if you can get it about $1200 year- 3 x the normal range. Health ins 100% covered for next to nothing. Gas, .50 gallon for Amoco 95 octane "white" gas. Used C1-C3's $2000-$5000. used C3's were not sought after, most around here wanted the C1-2's. I looked at a 75 coupe, L82 4 spd, with a/c and about 10k miles- at a dealership- $7500. I bought my 67 coupe within 6 months for $5k. Yeah, we made a lot less but had a lot more than today's world.
I checked the inflation calculator also, sounds a little low to me tho. When i got out of the service in 69 i was making 3.50 an hour with tons of OT, always had lots of coin for whatever. Bought the 75 new for $8250.00 loaded. Back then it sounded like lots of money but it really wasn't. Cool cars were really cheap for the times.
Looking at the crazy prices for cool rides now kind of puts it perspective since i will be 75 next month.
I remember "The Abbey"!
Lived 2 blocks away as a teen. 139th Edbrooke.
Some nice work came out of that shop.
Think the guys name was Abshire? Think the owners car had an airbrushed nude on the hood.
To take it a step further. $1,268 invested into the sp 500 back in 1977 is worth $172k (number is a little lower based on the recent market turbulence.
