Default Help with identifying engine stamp

As per my last post I took some pics I am trying to identify this motor .. unfortunately the owner has passed away but his wife said the engine block was a corvette 427 I am not sure if the spark plugs would be that small on a supposedly big block.. Any help would be appreciated ..

70s small block. None of them are from a Corvette, though one use of the "CTB" code was for an LT-1.

5 options are listed here, and in the Lime Book

Do you have any other photos? It's pretty easy to tell a small block from a big block. The exhaust ports, and valve covers, are immediately obvious. Don't judge by the spark plugs.

EDIT: The photo with the spark plugs didn't show up before. But clearly a big block. @67:72 has the proper link/information below, for a big block (sorry, not an LT-1)

Big blocks also had the CTB (the engine code starts with a T). Also from the nasty Z/28 page:

Dang! Guess it's not an LT-2.

Anytime someone has a BB engine it's always a 427 from a Corvette.

don't think you need to dig it out any further. it is a late, nothing special 402. mid america chevelles has it as camaro, chevelle or full size car. 210 or 240 hp. maybe interesting to see what head castings. but otherwise not a sought-after engine. last year for the 396 or 402. i think they were all 402 but some were marketed as 396.

I dont think ebay is the place to sell a complete big block. to heavy to ship 72 the compression had dropped which really hurts.

there was a similar engine for sale local to me for a long time. think it started at 1200, then dropped to 1,000, then 800. quick look i didnt see it so maybe it finally sold

It was from '70 to '71 when the compression dropped. From my study of the engine specs info from GM, I believe the '71 and '72 LS-5 engines are identical. The '72 HP rating reflected a change in measurement method. That the '72 also shows 15 net hp lower than '71, I further believe, is due to timing changes as the specs for those are very different. (misread the charts)

Corvette chart. This is an LS3. Lopo pass car engine. Similar power and compression reduction from prev years, but they tried to at least make the vette seem to be a performance engine.

Yes, LS-3. I didn't mean to muddy the waters with the LS-5 comparison charts - just trying to clarify the CR drop between the '70-'72 years.

I was only saying 72 b/c that’s the year of the motor in question according to the stamp
