Default Steering wheel repair

Have a 1980 with Oyster interior. As picture shows steering wheel cover is worn. I know I can buy a replacement for about $250. Looking for possible repair options. I have used the paint/dye to spruce up arm rests, etc. Little skeptical about trying it on the steering wheel cover. Any advice appreciated.

I don't know if Chuck Pelton still recovers them. If he does, that's an option. Here's a thread with some links:

I put a Volante S6 wheel in my 80 (which was missing the original wheel anyway). It seems to work okay. It isn't as soft as the stock wheel, though.

I might try to recover my wife's oyster 79 myself, and make the padding a bit thicker. There are kits to do that as well.

I've restored worse.

Sand all the original finish off with 180 grit, filling any deep scratches or dings with flexible furniture / vinyl filler, then smooth the wheel with 320 - 400 grit.

Seal with a leather / vinyl sealer, then color to your taste - my preference is SEM Color Coat.
