Default Exhaust suggestions

I’ve got a new to me 79 L82. It’s currently in the shop as I wanted a thorough go through of it since it was sitting a lot for a few years. While it’s in I thought maybe I’d upgrade the stock exhaust system (in good condition) upgraded to a true dual exhaust. I simply had in mind keeping stock headers and just bring the duals straight back (eliminating the cat) and installing two high flow mufflers. My mechanic said it would cost about 1500?! He keeps insisting a SS system. Does this sound right? Are there any more reasonably priced dual exhaust suggestions for this C3?

That sounds like a pretty good deal for a custom full stainless system. I got my exhaust for my 79 from corvette central. Pre-pandemic it was a 1k plus shipping. Had to grind on one of the header flanges to clear the Temp sensor port in the head. Other than that it was an easy fit

Anyone have experience with this one? Made for L82.

Oh I see your looking for manifold/shorty header back system. Then yeah I agree 1500 is a bit steep without headers. Hopefully someone chimes in about that system specifically.

I have a 78 L82 4spd and bought this system from Corvette Central. They have magnaflow mufflers. A change to true duals you will also need to buy a center hanging bracket. Had them for 12 years now.

https://www.corvettecentral.com/c3-6...f%3fcount%3d36

Before you buy from a vendor ie. post #3 check their reputation in the feedback forum. Some vendors have been barred from this site.

Back in the early 90's I purchased a "aluminized steel". Chambered exhaust made by walker. True duels.
Still in great shape. Stainless is overkill. And Stainless tends to crack.
Just another opinion.

System has been great. Installed it myself without a lift & took longer but not difficult. . Might be too loud for some.

I used the Corvette Central system with the Magnaflows on my '80. The system is very nice. I had no issues with fitment and the magnaflows had a nice tone. I did end up changing the Magnaflows for something more aggressive, but the Magnaflows are a nice sounding muffler and they may be exactly what you are looking for. I just wanted something a bit louder when cruising around and at idle.

Acceleration clip with Magnaflows:

Thanks. What did you swap out the magnaflows for? Flowmasters?

I installed a chambered system in my C3 and it was the best decision I made. The magnaflow system it had sounded like a ***** cat.

I fitted Pypes Street Pro chambered mufflers and an X-pipe on my '81 and it's the perfect blend of sounding muscular, but without being obnoxiously loud....

Exhaust note is very subjective. But ****, IMO that combination sounds so freaking awesome! Well done 👍 I’m thinking of getting a 2” into 2.5” X pipe design system. Was thinking of magnaflow mufflers but these sound exactly how I want. Where’d you get them? Thx

Thank you.

I got the mufflers from eBay... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164565666388

They're stainless and really nice quality.

I bought a locally made X-pipe of which there are are thousands to choose from, but here it is laid out for mock up on the lawn.

Just for info, my system is (was) a true dual, 2.5" which joins to the original 2" down pipes and standard exhaust manifold. The rest of my car is bone stock.

It doesn't drone either and I can have a normal conversation inside.

Best of luck.

Oh, and here's another clip of me driving up the street on very light throttle....

Yeah my L82 will be the same set up. 2” at the stock manifolds followed by 2.5” with the X design. Found these mufflers. Pricey. Almost $100 bucks state side!

I thought that was a good deal - everything is super expensive here in the UK.

here's one for $65... https://www.ebay.com/itm/25564047601...oAAOSwLv9i2bQH

In the grand scheme of things, they're cheap in my opinion, given how much they change the character of the car.
