Request for suggestions on a replacement shift ****
I have a Muncie 4-speed in my 1973 convertible and am looking for a replacement shift ****. I would like a white or ivory cue ball with the shift gate pattern on it. I currently have a stock black chrome **** but don’t really like the small diameter of the stock ****.
I have tried two replacements without satisfaction. The issue with both is that the threads are not deeply enough recessed into the **** so that the **** covers the reverse lockout t-handle to keep it from rattling while I drive. The two that I have tried are below. Does anyone have suggestions for me? I have researched online without success. Thanks, all.
This **** was from an eBay seller called core-shifters.
You could do what I did to my original ball to get it to fit right on my Hurst shifter. I believe the threads are 9/16 fine thread - take a nut, grind the hex down so it is just a hair larger than the diameter of the opening on the ball, then tap it in with a punch. now you have more/longer threads to screw onto the shifter.
Sorry I can’t help you with your issue, but you are looking to get rid of the black chrome original ball and it’s not all scratched up, like mine is, I might be interested. PM me if you like. Good luck with the project and let me know. Thanks Ike
I'm thinking, you already have the shift ball and nothing to lose. So, drill it deeper and run a tap in it to make the threads deeper. What do you have to lose. Worth a go I would think.
except a tap of that thread may be more expensive and harder to find than another ball. but certainly look into it. ok, there are 3 9/16th tap threads. coarse which is 12 tpi. fine-18 tpi and bicycle crank fine whih is 20 tpi. most likely culprit...
