I recently bought a 1978 with only 30,000 miles. It had been in a garage for years. I discovered the tires were over 25 years old, despite looking very new, I had a blowout on the highway. Had all four tires replaced along with new brakes. Here is what happened yesterday. My exhaust pipes broke off while driving. I was able to retrieve them and they were very rusty. Now I have to get them replaced. Here is what I noticed, however, and I hope this is not a stupid question, Is it possible my 78 didn't have mufflers? I have a couple of photos under the car before the pipes broke off and didn't see anything, but it looks as if the tail pipes were wielded directly to the exhaust. I'm new at all of this so please be patient with me. Thank you.

no questions are stupid we are all here to help each other as car enthusiast .. Please post some pictures so we can help you further… Did it come from the factory with Muffler of course, did previous owners take them off for whatever crazy reason possibly
I really don't know what the other owner did with the car. He passed away several years ago and his wife wanted to get rid of it. I will try to get a few photos in a bit.
A stock setup would have a muffler on each side of the spare tire carrier, just in front of the tailpipe, so yeah, if there were no mufflers, than someone had them deleted.
Those tires were old! Was it a rear tire that blew? I wonder if your old tailpipe/s (w/o mufflers), were spewing hot exhaust onto a rear tire and overheated it? (causing a weak tire to blow)
