Hey guys, my 76 has lost the driver rear turn signal/brake light, the bulb is good, the socket looks good, but it won't come on. If I run the 4 way flashers it just kind of barely lights up. Is this a common problem with an easy fix? Thoughts?
Check the grounds at your tail lights. Here's a diagram on my 1972. I'm not sure if your 76 would be exact but should atleast get you in the right area.

Attach a wire to a good ground and touch the other end to the brass part of the bulb holder,
If the bulbs work then the ground inside the socket is bad and the socket must be replaced.
Here's the socket I pulled out of my 80. Ground failed internally. I replaced all 4 sockets. I'm pretty sure the 75-82 cars all used the same sockets, just mounted differently.
I agree with Greg, likely a ground issue and not a hard fix if that's what it is.
But, now don't laugh at me, but I've had these symptoms happen on several older GM cars that use basically the same type of socket. I found that often the contacts at the 'bottom' of the socket were a bit worn, lost some of their 'spring', and didn't make good contact. Solution I've used: clean the contacts in the socket; take a soldering gun and add a bit of solder on the end of the 2 contacts on the bulb, use a small file to get rid of any solder 'burrs', and viola, it worked the vast majority of the time. Sounds a bit like 'bubba'? Maybe, but it's worked for me many times...... Best, Paul
Another thing to check..... I had issues with lights not working. Someone had replaced the rear lights. When they did this they spliced the new wires to the existing wire harness. They twisted the wires together and taped them. I took the splice apart, it looked good. When I cleaned them up the light worked. I guess there was electrical corrosion on the wires, something I couldn't see.
