Hello, im laying out my compression test procedure for my 1982 here, can you guys please verify it?
1) Remove spark plugs
2) Block open throttle to full
3) Disconnect injectors
4) Disconnect power to distributor
5) Connect compression tester to a spark plug hole, ensure threads dont go inside cylinder
6) crank engine using starter, get 2 - 3 compression strokes
7) record reading for cylinder
You might check if you want to do a test with the engine cold or warmed up. With a little oil in the cylinder or not. Do you crank it until the pressure stops rising or just a few compression strokes.
I personally like to charge the battery up before the test and then test it while the battery is attached to the charger maintaining the full charge. This gets you more consistent results as the cranking speed is the same for all the cylinders. A weaker battery will not spin the engine as fast. I also like to put an ounce or two of oil in the Cylinders and try it again.
A tie wrap on the throttle holding it wide open is easy to do. The key is constancy while performing the test. If you have a electric fuel pump then you should pull the fuse to stop any fuel flow.
