Default Left rear wheel clunk

I had the entire unit out of car.....replaced trailing arms both sides, U-joints a few yrs ago, installed a used rear from a member here 2 yrs ago.......last summer ran great...no problems...a few days ago backing out of garage it felt like the car was bucking a bit.....turned the car around and clunking got more pronounced like it was bumping against something........no rubbing everything seems tight......drove it for 40 miles...70 mph no weird sounds until car is stopped.....I start off slow...about 2 mph and clunking returns.......I have new fluid in the rear with additive..............I'm running in to a wall.....cannot understand what it could be............hoping someone with more experience in this field can help.......thank you! Ray

It can be several things but if you just bolted in a used diff without any knowledge of the history or not pulling the cover to check it then you may have some issues

Maybe something let loose with the parking brake inside the left rear rotor. I had that happen to me.

The clunk was there but everything looked good until I removed the assembly to reseal/paint. Then the stub shaft slipped out of the housing as I moved the assembly around..........

The problem..........the snap ring failed because the groove in the shaft was not deep enough per the Machinist's Handbook......(the other shaft and snap ring groove looked-measured well within tolerance....................

This may not be your problem, but the wheel needs to be off the "ground" to cause the half shaft to move away from the housing.

Let's face it. Im not sitting in your car listening to and feeling this clunk. From the right? from the left? Center?
LOTS of things can "Clunk".
I recommend that you get the rear end up on jackstands and start checking. Just because you have new parts. Doesn't nessesary mean you don't have a bad part.

Look at the front differential mount bushings. A bad bushing/loose bolt could be the culprit.

op
post some pics of your rear suspension as mentioned in previous posts, especially where the bushings are INCLUDING the trailing arm bushing that are new..
they could be bad even though newer or even chinesium poly replacements.. hard to know history..

I had a ring gear bolt shear or break which allowed it to back out of the ring gear. This was unknown to me until the differential was removed. The rear end started making a clicking sound that increased or decreased with speed. You may have a more severe case of this same issue. I was lucky to get to the problem before the bolt head worked its way out of the ring gear and fell to the bottom of the rear end causing who knows what mayhem. In any case it sounds like you are due for removal and rebuild of your differential.
