Hey everyone the tachometer in my 79 used to work but recently stopped and is stuck on $2,500 RPM I've read a lot and took it out of the car and applied 12 volts to it and the needle does not go to zero I know it's probably the PC board but is there a way to test if it's the PC board itself or the gauge itself? There are no burn marks on the PC board but I heard you cannot see trouble issues on a 78/79 board. It actually could be a resistor On the Border some other component. I went to zip Corvette to find a PC board and it looks like mine's a lot different than what they have as far as where the holes are. Thanks for the reply - Snake
Tach just stuck on 2,500 really does sound like a board.
Perhaps give Zip a call and discuss your concerns. They are nice people and always very helpful. Perhaps the photo they show is just an example, not necessarily the exact board for your car.
Testing is fairly simple. Like all electric tachs. Power, ground and tach signal wire.
It continues to surprise me how frequently this topic of tach boards comes up on the forum...and for good reason...they wear out! This article dates back to the days of the Corvette Enthusiast magazine no longer in print but the absolutely best C3 magazine.
Interesting, My original factory board lasted about 25 years. Not really that bad considering a car built in the 70's wasn't really expected to last that long.
So I put in a replacement approximately 17-18 years ago.
Still working fine. Will the replacement last longer than the original? Guess I'll find out in the years to come.
