Default Power antenna relay

I’m having an issue with my power antenna. With the key OFF, my power antenna is clicking while the power antenna tries to rise. Once I turn the key ON, the power antenna works as it should both up and down. Does anyone have any ideas!

The power antenna was working normally; however, I changed out the stereo, aftermarket to aftermarket, and the problem started.

Any help is appreciated.

First are you sure you have connected the new stereo up correctly?
Could do with a bit more info after that. What year is the car? You say the antenna tries to rise, does it actually rise? Is the relay clicking just once or constantly on and off? Have you got a wiring diagram for the new stereo?

Thanks for responding. My car is an ‘82 collectors edition.

Yes, it’s installed correctly. The new wires were clearly identified so it made the install rather simple. Additionally, it was simply swapping wires from the old aftermarket to the new.

The relay is constantly clicking as the antenna rises. And it does seem to be rising very slowly as it clicks. But it sounds damaging so I don’t let it go on for too long. However, once in the in position, the antenna works as it should.

I'm not sure if your 82 is the same as my 78, but if it is then the circuit looks like this.

If the only thing you have done is to change the radio, then that suggests there is a problem with the signal from the radio to the antenna relay (the yellow wire). This should have 0V on it when the ignition is off and 12V when the ignition and the radio are both turned on. I would disconnect the wire from the radio to the relay and measure what you are getting on the radio output connector with the ignition on and off. Also see what happens to the antenna with the wire disconnected, does the relay click and the antenna raise or not?

I appreciate the help. I'll try your recommendation and report back. It'll be a little while though cause in the middle but at the tail end of an LS swap. Mahalo!
