Default How much caster is too much?

I purchased a tool to help me do my own front end alignment. It’ll check toe, camber and caster. Although it’s not exactly “ easy” to use, It gives repeatable results when double checking things.

I checked the factory specs for front end alignment. 2.75 degrees positive caster IIRC is stock. I purchased adjustable upper arms, and without being anywhere near maxxed out, I’m at 4.70 degrees.
According to the same specs I’m reading, that number is also “ within spec”.
My understanding of additional positive caster is that it makes the car more stable, and less nervous at speed. But I simply don’t know dick about a front end alignment, as I’ve always paid to have it done. Is there a detriment to having this much additional caster?

Caster seems to be vague somehow
VanSteel
Street Specs
w/Factory Arms…...Max Positive
w/offset shaft ……..4.75* Positive
w/Tubular Uppers…6-8* Positive
Advanced Street Specs
Caster……………………Max Possible
w/Tubular Uppers…7-7.4* Positive

Gulstrand
Street 1-1/2 - 2-1/2 positive
AutoCross 1 - 1/2 (? makes it twitchy I guess)
Racing 2 to 3

VBP (I guess everything is the same caster wise)
Daily Driver
Caster 2.75° pos
w/offset a-arms 4.75° pos
Advanced Street
Caster 2.75° pos
w/offset a-arms 4.75° pos
Autocross Baseline
Caster 2.75° pos
w/offset a-arms 4.75° pos
Track Baseline
Caster 2.75° pos
w/offset a-arms 4.75° pos

M

The greater the positive caster, the better the car will track straight but the downside is greater steering effort. If you have power steering, the higher effort will be masked but is you have manual steering, too much is when you struggle to turn the wheel at slower speeds.

Additional caster also helps reduce the amount/tendency of most front suspensions to go into positive camber on the outside tire while turning in a corner.

Most with offset and slotted upper A arm shafts or expensive aftermarket A arms shoot for 5 to 5 1/2 degrees with power steering.
I run offset and slotted upper A arm shafts.
And highly recommend you shoot for at least 5 degrees.
Amazing the difference on the highway.

Oh, and to answer the original question. I wouldn't go past 6 degrees myself.

Caster isn't considered a "tire wearing" angle until it gets too high. As mentioned above you get camber roll and this can accelerate edge wear on the tires if turning frequently.

C6 corvette spec's for caster is 8 degree's +- .6 degree's. But without adjustable upper arms or slotted cross shaft you won't get much more than 3 degree's. Its better to balance right vs left meaning make then the same.

This is what I have been doing for years for DIY Alignment.

Too much and the tire can rub the fender opening when turning. Tire diameter will effect this too
