I thought it was interesting that the archival promotional photo of a ‘69 coupe now sold by Chevy as a poster at “Chevymall.com” shows a silver coupe with redline wheels, black California plates (because California in the 1960s was COOL), and a luggage rack.
Mine has one, so I live with it. Today, we prefer the cleaner lines but in the 70's they were weird and loved this stuff. With a chrome bumper car, it does fit, and the chicks dig it..
Mine came with one from factory. Previous owner removed rack and filled holes & re-painted car. Did a crappy job on both. So when I did a frame off in resto in early 2000's, I had the body shop refill holes. Unfortunately, after a few years the filled holes became slightly visible AGAIN if you looked hard, so I put the rack back on. I'm good with it. It was an original option.
My car 10 years after my buddy/painter filled the holes after taking my rack off and painting the car. Not a hint of a shadow.
Gas prices and poor mileage have drastically reduced how far my '76 C3 is driven. It's still a stock Turbo 350 but even with an OD trans upgrade I'd likely never take it on a trip where I'd need a rack. Mine came with one so that's that, but I'd prefer not having it.
Edit: I should mention I'm in Ontario where gas is priced about $6.50 a US gallon now. That significantly affects trip planning. Used to take it to work occasionally (64 mile round trip) but at that price it's about 35 bucks or thereabouts. It's about 13 bucks with my wife's Edge.
Didn't always feel that way. Agree that the luggage rack screams 1970's and is period friendly. However, the car's lines are cleaner without the rack. Rack's aren't deal breakers on chrome bumper cars for me.
The racks are OK on 68-73 cars. As long as the car has chrome mirrors the chrome rack is passable in my opinion. If the car has body colored mirrors the chrome rack looks out of place to me.
