Default Door install empty?

Door installation order.

Do you install doors "empty" or put all the glass/parts inside then mount?

I think I would install it empty, then install all the inside stuff, but it could be done either way.

Install empty due to weight. Then add all the internals.

It's easier to install internal parts when the door can be place on a workbench or padded saw horses....but as other members said-it isheavier andharder to manipulate into place.

Another member showed how to make a door lift by using a DIY padded frame bolted to a motorcyle/car transmission hydraulic lift........

The outer shell of the door fits against the front of the fixture and gets strapped to the fixture to hold the door solidly while it is positioned...which makes installlation a One-Person job.

SILLY ME...I ALREADY POSTED THESE PICS IN ANOTHER THREAD

definitely going to have hubs fabricate this!

read some threads say you should get all the guts in while on a table (much easier), others say wait till door installed.

I remember we chatted about what that “jail” was for. 😂

I've done door rebuilds on too many C3 to count. Hang them empty as they are pretty light. No need for anything fixtures of any kind. Mount the hinges to the body, grab the empty door, sit on the sill while resting the door on your knee. Slide the hinges into the openings on the front door and line up the holes and toss a bolt in each hinges and tighten until snug enough to keep them in place. Install the remaining bolts but do not completely tighten them. The bolts only need to be tight enough so one can still move the door with a bit of force/pressure. Carefully close the door to check fitment. Open and close the door while holding it firmly in postion. Adjust as need for proper alignment and fitment then tighten all the bolts. Re-check fitment and you're ready to load them. No need to struggle with and waste money on jigs. It's so much easier to install the internals with the door hung than wrestling with it laying flat. Again, I've done this numerous times. I just finished these last week. Good luck with your project!

Awesome! Thank you.

I think the alignment should be very close as DUB had already worked the gaps.

I have yet to restore a C3 door, but with other makes we install the door empty, then load the door with dummy weight to simulate window hardware, then do door alignment.
I know with other makes, if you align the door while it is empty, they then always sag when loaded with hardware.

C3 doors when empty car be picked up with one hand as they are quite lite for a car door. They don't have impact bars or any heavy metal, internal structures. They are simply a fiberglass shell, bonded to a stamped metal inner panel. I've skinned them as well. If the hinges are new or rebuilt and have new bronze bushings and pins installed I've never had a fully rebuilt C3 door sag. I've done at least a dozen of them. Hell, I'm just an old Hot Rodder trying to offer one option. There are many more. Cheers
