I am starting my new carpet installation in my 72 coupe using an Al Knoch set. The car had what I thought was a poor carpet job by a previous owner, but what turned out to be the original factory carpet.
When installing the main cargo piece, do I bring the back up to just above the cargo light and 3 rubber plugs, or higher til I hit the hinges for the rear window tray?
Would it work to run it all the way up to the lip in the back wall and install the window tray hinges OVER the carpet?
The rear should have two "wings" that go out to the sides and hide the hole back there.
The height of the carpet is really set by those two touching the back of the wheel well as it goes back along there.
Even though it's hidden by the window tray, I added some black "trunk liner" material behind the carpet and up to the top of the back wall, you can kind of see it there

Oh, and originally there were some styrofoam blocks that went into those cavities and it helped keep the carpet wings from flopping down. I used some large sponge pieces that I whittled into shape

And I don't think running the hinge plates over the carpet will work as good as having them tight to the rear wall. A slit to let them through is all you need
Thanks for the picture. I dont see the hinges for the window tray on the back wall. I see now what youre saying about the flaps and by using that as a guide I will have to take the hinges off and lay the carpet and then put them back on.
Hopefully theres enough forward adjustment in the latch up front to allow for the carpet and jute.
I marked up the image and added a second one showing the tray installed,
I'm not sure if they were over or under the carpet from the factory, I was trying to clean everything up and hide what I could so they went under.
The reproduction carpet was taller than the original on mine, otherwise it would have sat lower by a little bit under the hinges I believe
