Default Door not staying open

The driver door on my son’s ‘74 doesn’t click to stay open, it just swings freely. Is there a fix other than changing out the entire hinge?

Replace the door spring in the top hinge.

Order a top door hinge "S" spring from your favorite Corvette parts vendor. They run about $9 and take about 5 minutes to "pop" in.

Google replacing C3 Corvette door S spring and you'll find an assortment of videos and articles about how to replace the spring.

Willcox has a great instructional video on installing door hinge spring. Installation tool is a heavy screwdriver with 2” 45 degree bend at end.

Actually, changing the hinge wouldn't help one bit. The hinge doesn't come with the spring. A broken spring is a common issue and very easy to fix.

Thanks to all. Someone said that I’d have to replace the hinge.

That’s what makes this site so great.

As long as you're fixing the spring, evaluate the hinge pin bushings for replacement. Open the door to varying degrees and lift on the end of it. Anything more than a smidge of up and down movement will be from worn bushings and/or pin. Also an easy and inexpensive replacement process. If the wear gets excessive in this regard the door will drag on the body at the latch.
