Default Side Pipe

Hi Guys,
Weird request here, but where else to explore the depths of C3 wisdom.
After approximately 7 years of side pipes with no incidents, I happened to have gotten my sweat pants too close to the hot passenger side pipe and melted a big blob on the pipe.
Any recommendations on how to remove it without destroying chrome finish on the pipes?
Thanks guys

Plastic scraper would be my first try to get off the heavy stuff, once you get under the edge it should try to separate, then maybe some lacquer thinner, guessing that the material was polyester or something along those lines, you can thin polyester body fill with lacquer thinner so it might de-solve anything that's left

Try the scrapper underneath somewhere not visible first, chrome should be waaaay harder than the plastic but these days you just never know anymore....

Were you wearing sweatpants and driving your vette out in public? I think there's a law against that somewhere... A crime against swag...yeah swag...I heard the kids at the mall use that word.

Guilty as charged. The car is the only source of swag these days…. especially as I struggle to get in and out with replaced knees. What a show it must be.

I know exactly what you mean, I have early onset Parkinson's and it looks like I'm having a fit getting in out of my car! Lol.

You may try a heat gun and lacquer thinner.

If my memory serves me, on the Mohs Scale of Hardness , chromium is one of the hardest elements found on Earth. It is quite a bit harder than nickel. I think if you are able to get most of the crap off, you can get any remainder with a nickel without scratching the chrome side pipe. Test it on another piece of chrome if you can, to insure I haven't steered you in the wrong direction and messed up your pipe.

At the expense of a hijack, I love your side pipe setup. Would you share your components?

20+ year hip replacement and no flexibility at all. I should sell tickets to folks wishing to see an old, fat bastard attempting to get into his car. I have to dive in head first, and once in the wife can enter.

My experience with steel wool is that it works great on chrome but at some point it will scratch it. Id try some of the other suggestions first.

Ouch! Glad you’re okay.

When I tell guys I have a ‘69 Corvette, one of the first questions I get asked is whether it has sidepipes. Because I was born without the gift of agility, I passed on them. Nothing good can come of my bare leg making contact.

They do look utterly amazing, though!

And this is why I am doing heat shields. I hope you can get it off.

if you use steel wool make sure it is 0000. that will not scratch chrome when used with a good chrome polish
