This is a question about my dad's vette. it's a 1980. It was haveing an issue leaking at the speedometer housing(?) where you screw the cable in. I apologize ahead of time, I know nothing about this vehicle, my dad is 80 years old and has had the car since 87, but his memory is failing a bit and he can't remember many details about the car. There was nothing that I could find that would tell me the specifics on the transmission. Its an automatic so from what I have researched I thought it had the TH 400 in it. But when I look up speedometer housing for the TH400 it isn't even close to whats on his car. He has stripped the threads due to over tightening it and he needs to find the correct housing or part that it needs, where the cable screws into. I have taken a picture and hope this helps someone to help me find the correct part for him. Thank you in advance.
First thing you need to do is identify the transmission.
Easiest way to remember the difference between the TH400 and the TH350 is the shape of the transmission fluid pan.
The 400 looks similar to the state of Texas.
TH400 The second one is the TH350.
It just has a corner missing.
If it’s not one of these 2, then it could be an electronic tranny.
It's a TH350 if it is the original automatic. They are easy to identify from a clear photo of the trans pan, if you are so inclined to go back under the car. I think the O-rings need to be replaced. This might help with your search. Pick up a shop manual and assembly manual, too! https://www.zip-corvette.com/57-81-s...
I agree, it's a TH350 in that picture and that would be right for a 80 vette
Common leak area, usually just o-ring needs to be replaced, any transmission shop should have boxes of them. It's not a Vette thing, just a GM thing so nothing special
The speedo cable nut is pretty mickey mouse so the threads might not be as bad as you think, if they are then to replace the bullet isn't bad at all, just remove that bolt beside the cable and it should pull out as a unit. if the car is raised some in the back it usually doesn't even leak much fluid out
