72 all original 61,000 miles. I got this car 6 years ago it’s in great shape. Over time doing maintenance and minor repairs, I looked at the bird cage in the kick panels and it’s very clean. Just being curious I pulled the trim around the windshield and found what’s shown in the pictures below. Drivers side is perfect. Pass side is mostly except the area of surface rust shown. The big surprise was on the inside of the upper trim pice. Apparently at some point in its past some water got I there and settled in the foam inside the trim to the point where it completely rusted the metal support inside the trim. I pulled the rusted metal out in the pic. There is still rust stained foam backing behind the vinyl. My interior is all original and I’m concerned that if I replace the upper trim piece with new it will look different. The vinyl side of the trim piece is perfect. I’m inclined to clean out the old stained foam and replace as needed and reinforce it with some new steel or rigid plastic in order to retain the original piece. Any thoughts? Inside trim pass side. Pretty common situation. If it were mine, I’d order a repo from Al Knoch ($110) and put the original on the shelf. His parts are made with the original GM molds and are spot-on perfect.
I'm with the O.P. I'd give a repair a go. Seems the reproduction parts never fit as well as the originals.
And once repaired and reinstalled, no one will see the patch.
