Default Engine codes ( What an Engine is This 🫣?)

Hi all

I am completely disassembling a 1974 C3 for restoration.
The engine gives me some questions and
I need your help with the various codes on the engine.
Certainly not the original engine
But I would like to know which one I have here...

I have found following;
66000
10C169605
T0414CNR
340261 GM 5
D13 70
3970014

VIN 1Z37J4S405268

Does anyone know what the original engine would be? (L48 195 or 250 HP?)

Thanks for your help

Herbert

I don't know about all of the numbers you came up with, but the "J" in your VIN indicates the original engine was the base, L-48 350 engine.

The T0414CNR decodes as follows: "T" is for the Tonawanda engine plant. "04" is April, "14" is the 14th of the month. "CNR" is the engine suffix code for a 350/300 with a 4bbl and an automatic from a 1970 passenger car (Impala, Nova, Camaro, Chevelle).

3970014 is the block casting number. "D1370" is the block casting date "D" April, "13" 13th of the month, "70" 1970.

If the car's a 74, it's not the original engine, it's a 70 L-48 350, which to be honest is not a bad engine.

Looks like it's a 1970 350, 4 barrel, 300 hp with auto trans.
Fifth digit in your VIN is "J" which indicates your car originally came with the L-48.
Cheers, Greg
