Default Floor Board Part Identification

Did some sound proofing recently and was just curious if anyone knew what the purpose of this indention part is to the left of the clutch pedal in my 78. Not a vent or anything, but looks like one. Just structural I guess?

I'll take a stab at it: It's a leftover remnant of when C3s had the floor mounted headlight dimmer before it moved to the column stalk dimmer in '77 (?). No reason to retool the floor pan so Chevrolet just left it as it was from earlier needs.

It's a "dead pedal". It provides a footrest near the clutch pedal to keep your foot at about the same level as the clutch pedal, thus providing a smoother transition to the clutch when using it. The factory carpet in most 68-76's had a molded rubber pad (similar to the heal pad under the pedals) on that spot as part of the carpet. It was a common feature in sports cars.

It doesn't really serve any purpose in an automatic car, other than a footrest. Automatic cars have it mainly because it's easier for GM to have just one floor.
