Default A question about auto shifter adjustment

I took a used shifter and shortened it and now while it works fine it's not adjusted to the console. I believe there is adjustment at the tab on the trans but why would it be out of adjustment,is there that much of a variation that the tab on the trans needed to be slotted for this very reason. The car is a 75,I would think the auto shifters all all pretty much the same from 68-75.

To be clear:
The PRNDL display is not matching the shifter position on the console?
If so, maybe you can adjust the cable length where it bolts to the side of thhe trans.
Wait for expert. members to verify this.

  • The only adjustment is the attachment point on the transmission. It is slated for some small amount of movement. I just went through this when I purchased a new cable because for some reason the new cable is about a 1/4” longer than the original cable.
there is no adjustment to wheee the bracket attaches the the oil pan but if you had to you could slot the holes to get a little more if the bracket isn’t enough

Start by disconnecting the cable to the transmission and place the shifter in park. Then see where the hole in the cable lines up to the transmission. Then do the same for the Drive position (3rd).

The shifter has no adjustment to the position the the PRN321.
if this is not lining up correctly then the detent plate is different for some reason
The detent plates are spot welded in place unless someone took it off.

look closely at the detent plate and see if maybe someone filed the detent a to get it to work with an OD transmission-PRND321

Only detente are in the transmission, there are gated positions on the shifter itself but nothing was modified. I will have to try the adjustment at the slotted transmission tab.

There is a DETENT PLATE at the shifter. See here where I modified mine for a 4 speed automatic so as to allow selecting First Gear:

I've always thought of a detent as a ball and a spring. Regardless nothing has been changed on the shifter.

The adjustment is only on the transmission lever. The shifter was to be put into park (with a spacer holding it "not all the way against the stop" and then the with the transmission in park the bolt/pin that the cable attaches to is tightened in whatever place it was at.
The spacer was to make sure the transmission was in park and not just the shifter bottomed out before it was actually in park

They refer to it as a detent in the AIM, I tend to think of it as a gate
