Hello all, took a ride today in 1980 L48 auto, drove for about a half hour, all was perfect and all guages where they should be, I stopped for about a half hour at Corvettes and coffee and the car wouldn't start when leaving, plenty of power, no battery issue, always good charge and no drain but ignition wouldn't engage.
someone got under the car and jumped the starter solenoid and it fired right up and drove home no problem.
got home in the garage and started the car a few times with no problems... assumed it's the neutral safety switch, I just went out now, fired right up but then stalled and now again ignition wont engage... the car has never stalled or even come close so now thinking it might be ignition switch, I will replace both while I'm under there but wanted to get possible other thoughts.
Those were the exact symptoms I had when my ignition switch started going out on my 1980 Corvette. The problem started off intermittent and then started getting progressively worse so when it wouldn't start in the garage we traced the problem back to the ignition switch.
Before tearing into the ignition I would suggest bypassing the neutral safety swtich. It's easy enough and that will be out of the picture if you can eliminate it.

was actually considering looking into doing just that., thank you
Golfobsessed Here is a picture. Pretty sure the purple ones go to the Neutral Safety Switch. There is a connector there locally, disconnect it, and then jumper the other side of leads that go to the vehicle. BE CAREFUL because car will now start in any gear not just Park and Neutral.
Hello again all, just installed the new ignition switch... could have used one more hand and a few more joints.
I was wondering if someone could tell me what this switch is, attached to the same mounting as the ignition switch with a rod going into it, the rod does not appear to move when I turn the key.
