Hi All,
First post me for
Just got my hands on a 71 and it almost killed me day one 😂 So the problem I’m facing and can’t seem to figure out as it seems the car is always in gear but I can shift. So here’s the run down of what I can do.
I can start the car with the clutch in and in N and everything is fine.
But if I slowly let off the clutch the car seems to be in R and moves (remember it’s in N right now)
If I shift into 1 or 3 it doesn’t do anything but the car starts to die down as if it’s engaging but I don’t remember exactly if it moves in reverse like when it’s in N but it DEFINITELY doesn’t move forward . (I would test it again but it’s currently up on Jack stands me trying to figure it out)
Another thing I’ll mention is I can’t shift into 2 or 4 no matter what and I’m almost positive I can’t shift into R
reason I say this is when I have the shifter I can only solidly get into 2 gears so whether that be R and 1 or 1 and 3 which I’m more confident I am able to shift into.
It only makes sense the pedal-clutch-slave cylinder- pressure plate works fine as if it didn’t I would start the car and it would be in gear and then stall.
I looked up some forums and read to see the 2 rods on the side of the trans and everything seems in tack especially the one rod for the 2 “up” gears I am able to shift into just not exactly sure what the 2 gears are.
if anyone has any idea or things I could check please let me know. Thanks!
When a shifter gets old and a bit sloppy, it’s possible to get the tranny in two gears at the same time. Reverse and some forward gear. The solution is to get under the car (safely) and make sure that the two levers on the side cover (1-3 and 2-4) are pointing straight up (in neutral). Then make sure your reverse lever and rod is in neutral also. Then you are in neutral all the way around (in no gear). Now you should be able to shift normally and have each of the gears you want by utilizing the shifter.

Also on installation of mine Hurst shifter on a Doug Nash 5 speed, If I remember correctly there is a alignment position that all the flat arms need to be in than a pin / drill bit / that holds them in the
correct location & then you install the shifter arms..
As 62corvette said. You're more than likely in 2 gears at the same time. Now you know that you have a sloppy shifter. Treat it gently because once it starts happening, then it means it can happen easiiy again.
As informed, block the wheels, jack up the driver side, wiggle the levers until everything is in Neutral again.
Sounds like your stuck in reverse even thou the shifter says N. Get under the car and check the shifter connection at the reverse rod. Did the nut on the shift shaft coming out of the trans work loose? This would allow the plate the rod connects to to come off the flats of the shift shaft and you would be unable to get it out of reverse.
First off, there is no slave cylinder. The clutch is fully mechanical. If you have the Muncie original shifter, they are prone to jamming in two gears at once. The first thing I would do is to check to see if the upper and lower bolts are in and secure. Sometimes the lower bolt works its way out and and causes the shifter to "shift" on the mounting bracket. Once secure, realign the shifting rods. You will need to make or buy a tool that fits into the shifter to align the neutral gate. The gauge should be 1/8" thick by 41/64" wide. I made one with a piece of aluminum. Remove the rods from the transmission, slide the tool into the shifter while in neutral. Adjust and attach the rods to the transmission while the tool is in place. That should do it. While you are at it, adjust the clutch linkage so there is about 1 3/8" to 1 1/2" free play at the clutch pedal in the car. That should do it for the clutch. Good luck. Jerry

This happened to me tonight. I thought I was going to be stranded waiting for a tow. Luckily, I have this forum and while I was waiting for the tow, I was able to crawl under the car with two wheels on the curb and find the 2–4 shifter arm was not pointed up. Following this advice, I simply clicked it over and I was back on the road.
My NEW repro shifter was installed within the past year. I guess I shifted too quickly. Sure would like to know what would cause this new part failure.
