There is a bubba fix that uses an L-shaped spring that sits in the hollow under the moving top plate but I've never used one. I've considered seeing if I can create replacement springs for the extra handles I have on my parts table...
Those cheap spring clips are nothing more than a "band-aid" fix. Also known as bubba, was here.
Your car, your money, but consider replacing the whole handle.
Snoop around on EBay motors. Use the search box. Sometimes people have boxes of Vette parts they are finding and cleaning out of garages / basements.
I found a N.O.S. drivers-side exterior handle, still in original package on EBay for $30. Beautiful chrome, 100% GM.
I just replaced my pass side handle. The time you invest in pulling the door skin to access the opening near the top of the door (to remove the handle nuts and rod) are far more costly in time and you'll want that fix to be permanent.
I looked at replacing my broken spring. To do it correct it appears the rivet has to be removed to take it apart and a new one put in. After finding a correct spring. Looked way easier to buy new ones.
