Default canister

can someone tell me what the canister does and if it can be refinished . it looks bad from a 68 327

Yes it can be refinished. It's a yellow dichromate finish like quite a few other components of the vacuum system, like the headlight canisters, carb, etc. If you want to tackle it yourself, look up Eastwood and dichromate kits.
