I sent an email to the seller today; waiting for a reply. I'm familiar with most mechanical and electrical stuff on older cars. I've read through several older posts about birdcage and frame rust. Does anybody see any obvious red flags with this car?
Looks like a nice original driver quality car. Of course they didn't show the underside or the birdcage. The trim tag looked like it was riveted in the wrong spot but that could be one of those weird factory things.
By all means, investigate birdcage rust. The kickpanels need to be removed to look at the #2 mounts and the access covers in the front of the rear wheel wells for the #3 mounts. Pull the A pillar interior trim and the top header interior trim and very carefully inspect for rust.
You will want to get detailed pictures of the underside as well.
I've had some early C3 with trim tags bent up in corner from the positioning of it so to me it looks okay.
The HEI distributor is a bummer, as there are many conversion kits for the original distributor. In addition all the missing shielding.
Looks sharp but you can't buy a car based on photos. Pay for a good inspection with driving test. A checklist of what works and what doesnt, driving characteristics, rattles, rust, mechanical concerns.
I've visited that dealer 3-4 times. Small one man operation. After talking, I felt he is an honest guy who sell nice cars. If you like the car, make a trip to see it person.
Thanks to everyone for the replies. If the seller gets back to me I will be asking for more information and more pictures of the car. I will absolutely make the trip to see the car in person if the car seems good. Is there an inspection service that really knows C3 Corvettes? The ones I've been able to find were more general classic car inspection services.
I can't say for sure this is the same car I inquired about some time back before purchasing another 69 from Florida... was about 5 months ago, looks like the same, I didn't purchase because the rivet popping around the front surround was pretty bad.
Looks pretty nice, but definitely check for rust. The birdcage and frame rails need checked. Pay particular attention to the rear frame curves at the rear wheels. Just in front of the wheel "curve" shape where the curve meets the crossmember in front of the wheel. They rust something FIERCE there. It's not uncommon for a pretty nice looking car to have thoroughly rotten frame areas. It can be fixed, but it is a huge job.
Pretty neat car....stripper with an L46 350 and 4 speed......betcha it is pretty quick.....
I think 34k is a bit dear for this but it is a dealer......so not terrible.....
But as stated....this needs to go on a lift and the kick panels removed while on the ground......
I was able to use some of the advice everyone has given me here. I went to a local Cars and Coffee yesterday morning. There was a 1972 coupe there. It looked like a real nice car inside and out. Even underneath looked pretty clean from what I could see. As I was looking around the windshield trim I could see a quarter inch diameter rust hole in the passenger side of the birdcage. I wonder what it looked like behind the kick panel?
