Default Horn button assembly

I ordered a horn cap assembly kit from Volunteer Vette Products, and wanted to know what members here did to ‘buck’ the hollow posts down over the emblem and horn button retainer.
My original, which is the recalled brushed aluminum horn button and lock ring, keeps coming apart when I have to remove it, and I changed the steering wheel to one my dad used in his ‘75, and ordered a black horn button kit to match it.
I have ‘repaired’ the original twice now, after it came apart after the first time I repaired and reinstalled it when I had to pull it again because the horn stopped working, and I really don’t want to have to do it again. Rather just put it away.

So is there a ready made tool I need, or do most people just use a center punch it flair it?

GM used those hollow posts on an assortment of emblems and parts, and that's the way I've always secured them, by using a center punch of a slightly larger diameter then the post.

You don't say what year car you have, but by mentioning you have the "recalled brushed aluminum" cap I assume you have a 77. I'm sure you're aware that the cap you ordered is the 77-82 style, which is different in both appearance and I think diameter, then the horn cap used with the 75 steering wheel.

Don't throw away that 77 aluminum horn button, even though it comes apart. I'm sure there's more than a few people out there with 77's that would love to get a hold of it. I would think that it could be put back together using something like JB Weld?

thanks for the reply!

Yes, my Vette is a ‘77.
The steering wheel from my dad’s ‘75 is an old (but in almost perfect condition) aftermarket wheel from VIP Products, and it bolted right up, with no issues with the tilt/tele lock ring, and the original horn button from my Vette also fit with no issues.

but I guess it could be why the horn isn’t working.
I have to pull it back apart to see if the horn contact ring is actually contacting the plunger or if something is binding.
If I have to swap to a ‘77 specific steering wheel, I’ll do that later and just drive without a horn.

I tried JBWeld over the posts and retainer ring, and while it held together for the install, when removing it it all came apart again.
I don’t want to make it any worse, so I’m just putting it away. Will probably also swap over to a black t/t lock ring in the future too.

I also own a early 77 with the SUPER rare brushed aluminium horn button.
I think your absolutely crazy removing it!
However, I will be happy to purchase it from you.
It's worth stupid money.
If I were you I'd find a way to repair it. But you tried and it didn't work out, so you should just sell it to me.

Hmmmm..

maybe I will sell it to you…

but I’m actually saving it. At some point I’ll get the original steering wheel recovered, and put it back to stock.

Sounds like a good plan.
I don't have billion dollars anyway.
