I had to replace the rear Y pipe on my 1979. I also put 255/60r15 tires on. I find I'm bottoming the exhaust out very often. I inclined to think the Y pipe is not bent quite right. The other thought is, have the rear shocks lost some compression and letting the rear drop to quick. Has anyone run into this and have a solution, or just let it beat itself into place.
Why your running a Y pipe is beyond my comprehension.
none the less. How it is installed is everything.
I find the Bilstien B8's really help control the bounce.
Especially good if your running a mono spring.
Not driving your car or looking at your exhaust so I can only speculate.
If your running a mono spring with standard shocks. Yes this clearly will be bouncy and a part of the problem.
If this Y pipe isn't installed tight up to the spring in the center, and the bends in the right places. Yes this too could be a problem.
How about some pictures of this pipe under your car?
I have the L48 with just tuning modifications so i just put it back stock. I have the stock spring in place and had had put KYB Gas Adjust shocks on about 8 or 9 years ago. I'm wondering if the gas charge has leaked out. When I do a bounce test the shocks seem ok. Bubba might jack it up and lower the car on some wood blocks to bend or oval the pipe a little.
Hopefully you got the y-pipe from a reputable source such as Corvette Central but really....show us some pictures. It may just be an installation issue. Lotsa folks here with lots of experience are willing to assist....if they can eyeball what you have going on.
After looking closely and having some other Corvette guys look. I have determine the pipe is not bent and or fabricated correctly.
I am now working with vendor on a resolution. I believe I will go with a Magnaflow cat back, don't know how it will sound but it is wit's going to be.
Thanks for the input.
