There is some surface rust on the side pillars and bottom frame of the 1971 I am restoring and I am replacing the top and upper corners. When the sides and bottom are clean I have assumed that I will treat/paint them with POR 15. Does anyone have experience with POR or any other treatments that you could recommend?
I've used POR and Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator with good success. I've also used Phosphoric Acid (about 20 bucks a gallon at home depot) to treat rusty areas after sanding before priming and painting. On my birdcage I also did the top corners with welded in replacements and treated the bottoms with the Eastwood product. Came out great. Pretty big project but very satisfying when done.
You can also treat the inside of the window channels with the internal frame coating. You can get up into the side rails where the #2 body mount is. Top rail, just go through one of the screw holes.
Thanks, The body is off the frame which has been sandblasted and powder coated but as long as it is open I will spray the internal coating inside all rails and cross members, etc.
I used this Eastwood product on the frame internal of my race car and it worked very well. The can comes with a wand that lets you get into every small space as it fits through any frame holes. I did use four cans to completely coat the frame internal, but I became a little over zealous in the process.
