Clean/repaint engine compartment
My totally empty engine compartment is in pretty good shape and I plan to power wash it before starting to reassemble. Does anyone have any suggestions on whether the power washing is enough of if I should apply some sort of a protective coating, and if so, what?

I am in the same process on my 73. I did not power wash. I hated all of the black, tar like gunk stuck to the firewall and other parts and the only way I could get it off was to use a heat gun and putty knife and razor blades. Once all that stuff was gone I cleaned up the residue with lacquer thinner. I let that outgas for a few days and primed and painted a satin black. Probably took 8 hours over a few days to get to the point where I could paint it.

I would add prior to primer wipe down with a good wax and grease remover. Lacquer is a good cleaner but it tends to move silicone around not remove it.
I've had the best luck removing silicone like Armor All is wash it with Dawn dish soap three times changing the wash water after each wipe down. Then a couple of wipe downs with wax and grease remover. Again changing the wipe down towel after each wipe down.
