HI guys-easy ? 70 small block ac more power than stock.what size thermostat should I be using 160 180 or 195 the car seem to have a lot of preassur.runs around 220 plus I need to change. the radiator drain **** brass because it broke and I cannot open it. pretty stuck on there .I dont feel like taking the rad out,THANS FOR YOUR HELP. First thing I said after WOW! Was, does it run.
Well of course not.
I guess that was my start as a motor cycle mechanic.
I rode that thing all over the state. Then after turning 16. And 2 days after I got my motorcycle license I got pulled over for the first time.
And yes it was my paper route money that got me the parts to get it going. And a Father that didn't realise that I needed to be 16 to drive a motorcycle on the road. And I never did tell him. He's gone many years now. Perhaps he's looking down and grinning.
Hi Bob! Most of us run a 180 degree thermostat. I run a high flow 180 degree thermostat.
if your drain valve is broken, just pull the lower rad hose off.
All 1970 Corvettes except for the LT-1 used a 180 degree thermostat. 1970 LT-1s used a 195 degree thermostat due to the A.I.R. equipment.
Why do you feel you need to change? Chevrolet specified 210 degrees as normal operating temperature (230 degrees for heavy traffic, stop and go, and prolonged hot weather idling) in the owner’s manual… If you’re running 220 degrees and your radiator isn’t puking coolant, is a change really required?

Depending on the motor i had installed at the time, i run a180 when it was chilly out and a 165 once summer hit in my 327. On my current big block the180 is keeping it right around 185 to 190. Havent bothered to go colder
