Default Door Panel Recommendations?

Hey All,

I'm considering replacing the door panels that were in our '77 when we got it. They are reproduction pieces, were hacked up by someone when cutting the holes etc., and don't appear to be great quality (i.e. the fitment to the door is terrible).

Can someone point me in the direction of some quality panels?

EDIT: I purchased a dash pad from Al Knoch a few years ago and was very impressed with the quality. Are their door panels quality pieces as well?

Thanks,
Adam

Well........... The quality of the door panels I purchased from Knoch was very good (1972), I was disappointed a bit on the fit. Perhaps if I had had the opportunity to let the panels sit out in the hot sun for a period of time I would have had better luck with the installation.... Sometimes Knoch has OEM so you can check for those also and decide if the cost is worth it. I would go with Knoch again if I needed more in the future.

Al Knoch bought much of the original GM tooling so his reproductions are as close to OE as it gets. I’ve bought from them for years and have never been disappointed.

Last time I looked, Knoch sold panels with an original paper-mache like substrate...the same material that came from the factory, and a plastic substrate. I think the problem with the plastic substrate. is that after being formed, with time it can curl or distort, making it hard to fit. I think Knoch is the only one that sells panels in the factory like material. Apparently not all his door panels are available with this. The other manufacturer seems to be Corvette America. There are other vendors..Corvette Central also..

Me too. Knoch did the seats on my 68 and 70, the 68 soft top. Has the factory tooling for the 68.69 headrests and did my 68 headrests. Ended up sitting and talking with him for some time when his crew visited the Pomona swap meet. Very personable. Impressed with his employees.

Thanks for the responses guys! I really appreciate the help.

I'll give Al Knoch a call and see if they have the original style panels available. I think what I don't like about the current pair I have is the plastic backing. They just don't fit well, and you can't "bend" them at all to get them to form to the door shape.

Just FYI for anyone that may be looking for door panels. I called Al Knoch, and as 68/70Vette mentioned, they do offer the original "fiberboard" backing as an option for their reproduction door panels. The fiberboard versions are +$300 / pair additional to the cost of the plastic backed versions.

Also, FYI - they do not show these on their website, so you will need to call them and request that they be fiberboard backing.

Thanks again for the feedback and advice - much appreciated!

I bought some fiberboard deluxe panels from Al Knoch. Very pleased with them, far better fit than most vinyl backed panels I've seen. The velcro fasteners fit well with the factory fasteners. Reasonably flush fit to the door edges and bottom. Probably the best you'll find. Great people to deal with, good customer service.
