Unvented cap is for cars with an EVAP system. Earlier cars without the EVAP system had a vented cap. The tank has to be vented one way or another or it may collapse from the vacuum created by the fuel pump.
All that being said, I don't think adding a vented cap would be problematic, as your EVAP system would still draw fumes (as well as air through the vented cap)...
I know some will chime in about gas fumes in garages from the vented cap...
BUT
EVERY CAR built before the 70's had vented gas caps and no EVAP system.
The EVAP system was an EPA thing, not a safety thing...
I put a vented cap on my 77 back in the early 90's. I store my car in a very tiny one car garage that is barely big enough for the car to fit. The household laundry is at the front of the garage, sharing the space with my car. This garage is part of the house. My missus goes into said tiny garage often to do the laundry. She has a nose that can sniff out the slightest scent from 100 yards. Never once has she complained of fuel smell in or coming from the garage. All this nonsense that if you remove the charcoal canister and install a vented cap will cause excessive fumes is in my humble opinion,
just nonsense.
I have had all kinds of vehicles inside a garage with no gas smell as long as there is no gas leak somewhere...
Boats have vented caps, motorcycles have vented caps, lawn mowers have vented caps, every C1 and C2 sitting in a garage has a vented cap...
