Default P02 - Correct repaint scheme

Hello together,

For a while now I've been wondering what exactly the paint job on the P02 hub cap looked like. I am particularly concerned with the inner part of the hubcap, the fins are black on the sides, but they fade considerably towards the top.

Most of the rim caps I have seen so far have not been painted in these intermediate areas. I wondered about this for a while, as it makes the painting and masking process extremely complicated. Until I took a closer look at my caps and found very little color here. I suspect the rest has been washed out over the years.

I found little evidence on the web that it was painted there. It looks like it on the brochures from the past but I can't confirm it for sure. The NCRS book also wasn't helpful.

Hi Jeffrey,
I restored mine a couple of years ago. That part was just sprayed with black with semi satin. Nothing really heavy. Looks like overspray. P02’s are very detailed oriented. To do 4 of them, it took me 3 weeks of sanding, taping, painting & getting correct. Love the look. Makes the car stand out.

Thanks
Mark F.

Hello together,

Thanks! If I understand correctly, Grant's was also slightly black between the fins on the surface, but more like overspray. Do you have a detailed picture?

On the side, the fins are clearly black from the outside to the center. If I am not mistaken.

Yes, the restoration of these caps needs a lot of time. That's why I've been putting it off for a few years now ^^

Best wishes!
Jeffrey

Hi Jeffery,
For some reason, I can’t send you the pic. It’s say the file is too big. It’s definite overspray that goes in between the spokes. Not on the flat front part of the turbine. I will work on getting you a pic.

My Apologies

Mark F.

Hi Mark,
You can upload with the small pictures symbol in the toolbar when you make a post. The forum scaling automaticly the pic.

When I look to the turbine, they only black out the outer part on the side wall. That‘s right?

As you can see, it looks like overspray, no consistency.

Big Thanks! How do you have polished and taped between the upper part of the turbine. I think it‘s very narrow and tricky.

You have to use super narrow detail tape. You can get at Napa. If I remember, it comes in dark blue. There’s is examples how to tape the narrow parts on the forum. Just search P02 turbine hubcaps, and a bunch of search’s will come up

Hi Mark,

Thanks! The outer part of the P02 is clear to me about tapping. I wondering more about the insert fins turbine part, and how to cover this area. The fins on top are easy to swipe off with thinner.

I mark on your photo what I mean:

Realy? I am skeptical, the effort for GM would have been enormous to produce such an additional cover for the painting process.

And I found this pic.
