Default Gauge Cluster Question

Shouldn't there be holes for radio ***** in this cluster? I am seeing only a rectangular opening and it does not look modified as best I can tell. I am not sure what year this is for but am assuming 1980ish? Anyone know more details on this part?

Somebody's cut that bezel up to install a modern DIN radio in it. For reference, it looks like a 78-80 bezel and/or an 81-82 bezel for a car with the base analog face radio. 81-82's with the optional digital face radio had the clock in the radio face and the bezel had an oil temperature gauge where the clock is, so the hole was flat across the bottom like the other four gauge holes. 77's used a similar bezel, but they had "wings" on each side of the bezel to meet the curved shape of the 77 dash.

So this bracket added on the back was installed at some point when an aftermarket radio was used to replace the factory one? I have other bezels that have obviously been hacked up to accommodate an aftermarket radio but this one did bot jump out at me the way that insert was used. It looks pretty clean so it fooled me. I knew something didn't look right because of the missing **** holes, Thanks for the info! Here is another shot to show the bracket.

That looks like my 78 bezel after I cut it to install a single din radio. Vendors sell those precut for the single din bracket, so maybe the PO bought one already professionally cut up. They aren't cheap. Did the car come with a single din radio or are you planning on putting an OEM style with the ***** back in.

Actually, I have a '68 so I have no need for it. I just ended up with this in a bunch of parts I bought a few years ago. I have it listed for sale but noticed something didn't look right with the cut out so I asked the question to get clarification. After getting some response I did more research and found some aftermarket listings as you described. I am selling this one cheap compared to aftermarket, but I assume most would want original unmolested parts anyhow..

Some may want it to install a modern radio and save there stock one. It's definitely worth something to some.

That really doesn't look modified to you?

A replacement (with the holes you expect) is about $100-. Put that one on the shelf until you decide to ruin the look of your car with a 1-DIN radio. Or sell it for $20- on eBay. Transfer the gauges, though.

That looks like the sleeve to accommodate a "BENZI BOX" type removable radio.

It is currently on Ebay. I prefer auctions rather than trying to guess what something may be worth. I listed it for starting bid of $75 and someone hit that right away. There are still 6 days left.

Inside dims on the opening is 7 by about 1 7/8 inches. So I guess that equates to one DIN? I never heard of DIN's before this posting. I am not much of a radio guy. I am more of an under the hood guy I guess. It was a clean cut and with that sleeve it just didn't look like a typical home grown butcher job as I have seen in the past on Chevelle's etc.

I like the way you think! As I mentioned on another post I bought a bunch of Vette parts, most of which I did not need, to help a guy out that was going to have to put his dog down because he couldn't afford some kind of surgery or something that the dog needed. That was years ago and I have pretty much gleaned the few items i needed and now just trying to mitigate some of the cost and clear out some space. Most of his parts were from a '76 and since I have a '68 not much was transferrable.
