I have a 74 Stingray that is nearly impossible to get into Reverse. At times I have spent 10 to 15 minutes trying before I can get it into reverse. yesterday I was unable to get in reverse no matter what I did. Does anyone have a suggestion what may be done to fix it.
Agreed ^. Sometimes I release and re-engage the clutch — this rotates the gears to a new position.
Do you have any problems at all in the forward gears? A clutch not fully disengaging won't allow you to put into a gear, so any other gear change issues would likely indicate a clutch linkage adjustment.
Im assuming you have the stock shifter. Check the spring clip that holds the reverse shift rod to the shift lever on the trans. I have had two, where the exposed end of the clip was just long enough to catch and cause a hang up. In one case it popped out and reverse couldnt be engarged at all. If you find thats the case just grind 1/8" off that end. It wont affect the clip.
Get the car up on ramps. Get under it while a helper puts it into gear for you. What's going on under there? Lever on the trans loose? Rod out of adjustment. Bolt missing or loose on the shifter?
I would have to say the first step in repairing this issue is to have a look at what's going on.
The small rod on that goes down to the shift lever will not allow you to get into reverse (this is the lockout). If the rod is broken or the loose, you can not get into reverse.
