Default 1970 Speedo

Hello, I'm redoing my dashboard and took the speedometer out. I turned the piece in the back of the speedo with my hand, and the needle moved up the MPH but didn't go fully back down, but rather stopped at ~40mph. It did continue to turn when I turned it with my hand. Is this how it's supposed to operate, or the margnet is supposed to take it down to 0. Anything else I can do to further test? lubricate? send to restoration? Thank you!

Did it work correctly when it was still installed?

I don’t remember 🤦 I think so. I can just put it back and drive but taking it out again would be a pita. Looking to understand how it should work.

It's supposed to return to zero. They are usually tested with a cable and electric drill.

It definitely should drop to zero. It definitely should not go to 40 MPH turning it by hand. Maybe get the needle to bounce a bit by hand, but that's about all.
Send it off to be restored !
