I had the very same problem on our '68 - exactly like that. I checked out all sorts of stuff, and it ended up being the gauge itself. I found one in the FS section, replaced it, and it's worked great ever since. Hope you figure it out. Best, Paul

Hoping that's NOT it ...............it's such a pita taking that center unit out, apart & back in. That's why the top sections of these on most cars are broken. I will check out the wires to the alt tomorrow after work.

Curious what the difference really is ? Also if it's a bad gauge or a lose wire it wouldn't matter the result would be that same no ? What I mean is if a voltmeter was installed instead & it was a bad gauge or a lose wire there would still be an issue.
Do you have a multimeter and know how to use it? If it were my car, I'd take a bunch of voltage measurements (AC and DC), then try a different alternator.

Yup, I know how to use it......................BUT, I loaned it out & of course never got it back. No battery issues ever, charges fine, always starts, with no strain or dimming. BTW - it's a LAME OEM 42 amp alt.

It's probably worth picking up another one for $20-. Or a nice Fluke for $100+.
Alternator is internal or external regulated ?
Im gonna put my money on one of the diodes failed short or the gauge failed.
Any junk yards still on Long Island? They were disappearing fast about the time I moved out

right you are, and mine is broken - I'm pretty sure it was before I had to take it apart. I didn't think it was all that bad, really. I had to take it apart again a year later to replace the oil pressure line - so now I'm an expert! Best of luck with it, Paul

His profile says 68, so if original, external regulator.

There were a ton, but property values closed most of them.
