Default 1979 Oil Temperature Sensor Install

Howdy! I’ve got a ‘79 L48 C3 corvette, and I need help on installing the oil temp sensor to replace the clock.

Earlier today I went under the car to install the sensor above the oil filter, but I couldn’t figure out how to get it in. I bought the gauge/sensor combo from top flight, so I’m quite sure it’s the right part.

I was using the bigger threaded hole in the picture shown below. The sensor won’t go in at all. Am I being dumb by trying the wrong hole or is there something I’m missing? It is unclear what thread size the sensor is.

Think you need to remove that extension and screw directly into the block.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the gauge/sensor combo is? I replaced my 78 a couple of years ago and it was straight forward.I used no extensions.

So, that's the location for the pressure sensor.

The gauge that replaces the clock is a temperature sensor. It only came on 81 and 82 cars with digital radios (which had a clock built in).

I have the gauge, but I never figured out where the temp sensor went on an SBC (and the question is now moot for my cars).

Perhaps someone with an 81 or 82 AIM will answer that for us.

Default Update

I got around to installing the oil temp sensor again. There was in fact an extension I had to remove in order to screw the oil temp sensor directly into the block. Thanks for pointing that out.

Side note: the white stuff in the pic around the threads is a liquid thread sealant.

Do do you have both oil pressure and temperature? If that is where you put the temp sender can you post a pic of where the pressure sender is on your block?
thanx

I still need to put the oil pressure in at the top of the block. I’ll include pics of the sensor locations and wiring so that others can do it too (or catch my mistakes).

Looking forward to an update!

Neither pressure sender works anymore in my cars, but between 79 and 80, the pressure sender location moved. There should be a square plug at the top of the intake for your pressure sender.
