Dash Wire Harness Position??

Default Dash Wire Harness Position??

1971 Base

I realize this has probably been asked MANY times, but it’s still a great question for anyone trying to smash the dash into place:

Where should the main wiring harness run in back of the Left Lower Dash Panel?

1. On top of the gauges?
2. Above the rear of the gauges, along the angled metal portion?
3. Behind the Speedo and Tach

Right now, it’s in position 2, but it’s all very tight. If it runs along the top, the wires to the lower section of the Speedo and Tach get very tight.

Would it make sense to remove some of the tape so there’s more flexibility and space for the wires to relax?



Update after feedback: (Thanks everyone)

I took the panel out and re-ran the wires so they all came off the “back” side of the harness. I also removed some of the tape and made sure the wires were as straight as possible (not crossing one another.)

From there, it was pretty easy to place the panel, plug everything in from the bottom, and button it up. My dash pad is out, so it makes it a little easier to see what’s going on back there. Way more room and nothing is getting smashed.

Pretty sure the 71 runs ABOVE the gauges???
Take a look at your AIM.
My 68 ran below the gauges but that sucked. I extended the leads and added separate Connectors/Disconnects to either group side of gauges (Tach vs Speedo). I then moved my harness WAY ABOVE the Tach and Speedo to make everything easier ...... I recommend it (use Solder and Heat Shrink--- not worth taking shortcuts)

68, 69 and part of 70 ran the harness below the gauges and it made a miserable job to get the dash back it. Sometimes you would have to try it at least a dozen times before you found the proper sequence.
Sometime in 70 they got smarter and lengthened the harness and moved it about the gauges, It still is probably a fun job, but I'll bet it is easier than the earlier cars.
Here is an image from the 73 AIM, but yours should look the same.

As stated, It was moved to above the gauges in 70 sometime
